The Overall Goal Of Environmental Projects

There are seemingly an endless supply of environmental projects. People are making solar panels, for example, for use on farms. Other people are trying to figure out how to make cars that run on ethanol, which can be made from corn. Still others are working to create cleaning chemicals that do not release harmful toxins into the air and into the water supply. All of these projects are very noble, and many of them are being done with very little thought for making money. This will be an offshoot for the companies that develop these things, of course, but it is not their overall goal.

Instead, the end goal is to save the planet from the damage that man has inflicted on it as a species. People do a lot of things without thinking about the damage that they cause. There are more people now than ever before, so this damage is worse. There are also larger machines that create more pollution. People have cooked over fires for thousand of years, but never have they created as much smoke as a factory produces right now. People have an ability to destroy the world if they so choose, and environmental ideas are being thought of in order to keep this from happening.

There are many reasons why this damage has been done. You could make the argument, for instance, that technology progressed too quickly from the beginning of the twentieth Century until now. Things were being created and used very quickly, and not much thought was being given to the result of using those things. Cars are an excellent example. The impact that exhaust had on the atmosphere was not considered when there were just a few cars. With the invention of the assembly line, though, thousands of cars suddenly went into production. By the time people realized what the exhaust was doing, most people had them.

It could also be argued that the main reason for these problems is greed. Companies just wanted to make more money and so they ignored environment projects in the name of profit. A good example is how oil companies purchased the rights to the first electric cars. They then trademarked these and refused to put them into production. It was worth it to them to keep these cars from seeing the streets, even if they had to pay a lot to do it, because they wanted drivers to be forced to buy fuel.

The future of the world will be very interesting to see. People have now reached a sort of a crossroads. If they decide that they care just about convenience and profit, they will probably do more harm than good to the world. If they decide that they care about protecting the planet for future generations, however, the world can still be saved. Only in the future will the true impact of all of the current environmental projects be seen. Hopefully, people who are alive now will design them for this future.
